What is 240 GSM Cotton? Why It Matters for Your T-Shirt

What is 240 GSM Cotton? Why It Matters for Your T-Shirt

You've seen it on product pages. You've probably scrolled past it without a second thought. 180 GSM. 240 GSM. 220 GSM.

But what does it actually mean — and why should you care before spending money on a t-shirt?

Here's the short answer: GSM is the single most honest number on a t-shirt product page. Once you understand it, you'll never buy a bad tee again.

What Does GSM Mean?

GSM stands for Grams per Square Meter. It's a measurement of how much one square meter of the fabric weighs.

That's it. Simple.

The heavier the fabric per square meter, the higher the GSM. Higher GSM generally means the fabric is denser, thicker, and more structured. Lower GSM means lighter, airier, and more see-through.

Think of it like paper. A newspaper is thin and flimsy. A hardcover book page is thick and stiff. Same material, completely different density — and you can feel the difference immediately.

T-shirts work the same way.

The GSM Spectrum — What Each Range Feels Like

120–150 GSM — Ultra Lightweight

You've worn these. The thin, almost transparent tees that stick to your back on a hot day and lose their shape after three washes. Usually found in fast fashion. Fine for a hot Chennai afternoon gym session. Not built to last.

160–180 GSM — Standard / Everyday

The most common range for everyday t-shirts in India. Breathable, comfortable, decent quality. Our classic fit tees at Express Changos are 180 GSM — the sweet spot for regular fits that move well and feel light on the body.

200–240 GSM — Premium / Structured

This is where oversized tees live. Heavier, more structured, holds its shape. The fabric has real weight to it — you feel it when you pick it up. Doesn't cling. Doesn't go see-through. Drapes properly on the shoulders. This is the range serious streetwear brands work in.

250 GSM and above — Heavyweight

Hoodie and sweatshirt territory. Too heavy for everyday tees in Indian climate, but excellent for outerwear.

Why Express Changos Uses 240 GSM for Oversized Tees

Our oversized collection is built on 240 GSM, 100% cotton, bio-washed fabric — and that's a deliberate choice, not a marketing line.

Here's what 240 GSM actually does for an oversized tee:

1. It holds the drop shoulder silhouette properly

An oversized tee at 180 GSM looks like a big shirt. An oversized tee at 240 GSM looks like streetwear. The fabric has enough weight to fall correctly off the shoulders and create that clean, relaxed silhouette — not saggy, not shapeless.

2. The print lasts longer

Heavier fabric means the graphic sits on a denser base. The print doesn't fade, crack, or peel as quickly with repeated washing. Your Eda Mone tee or your Kollywood graphic should still look sharp after 50 washes — and at 240 GSM, it will.

3. It doesn't go transparent

Lower GSM tees go see-through when you stretch them or under direct sunlight. 240 GSM stays opaque. No awkward moments.

4. It feels premium without trying

The weight of the fabric communicates quality before someone even looks at the print. You feel the difference the moment you pick it up.

180 GSM vs 240 GSM — Which Should You Choose?

180 GSM Classic Fit 240 GSM Oversized
Feel Light, breathable Structured, weighty
Fit Regular, close to body Drop shoulder, relaxed
Best for Daily wear, summer Streetwear, statement looks
Print durability Good Excellent
Transparency Slight on lighter colors None
Price ₹549–₹599 ₹699–₹789

Neither is better — they're built for different purposes. If you're wearing it to a casual outing or a quick errand run, 180 GSM is your friend. If you're making a statement — a graphic tee that says something about who you are — go 240 GSM.

One More Thing: GSM Is Not the Whole Story

GSM tells you weight. It doesn't tell you the full picture.

Bio washing matters — it pre-shrinks the fabric and gives it that soft, worn-in feel from the first wear. Without it, your tee shrinks in the wash and the hand-feel is rougher.

Ring-spun cotton matters — it produces a smoother, stronger yarn that feels softer against the skin compared to open-end cotton.

The lycra ribbed neck matters — it keeps the collar from losing shape and going floppy after a few washes.

At Express Changos, all our tees combine 240 GSM cotton + bio wash + lycra ribbed neck. Not one of those things — all three. Because a Tamil streetwear tee that represents culture deserves to be built properly.

The Bottom Line

Next time you're buying a t-shirt online — any brand, not just us — check the GSM. If they don't mention it, that's already a red flag.

  • For regular everyday tees: 180 GSM minimum
  • For oversized streetwear: 220–240 GSM
  • For anything less than 160 GSM: leave it in the cart

Your tee should feel like it means something when you put it on. The right GSM is where that starts.
